“The idea of “Common Ground” refers to what we share, what should be shared and what can be shared. It has many layers as it relates either directly to the physical land, the public space which will be created during the Festival, or indirectly to the common feelings or habits that people share.”
Brief by Masasam, curators of Alwan 338 festival 2013
As a part of Alwan 338, Ulafaa collaborated with Lettera27 in Milan to be part of their ongoing project “At Work”. AtWork is a project that aims to support the right to literacy, education, and the access to knowledge and information. Through unique artists moleskin books, AtWork allows the artworks to circulate with a new free and shared user licence (CC BY-SA). The project is also based on experimental approach exhibitions and community-driven workshops.
To fall into Alwan’s theme, and in parallel to the aims of AtWork Project, Ulafa’a introduced the project as a workshop under the same name, adapting “Gathering Point” as a theme that unites the artists’ work. The participants included artists coming from various backgrounds and disciplines, interpreting the theme uniquely one sketchbook at a time.
