Alriwaq Farewell

A farewell to the place that fostered Ulafa'a from the beginning; Alriwaq Art Space. The gallery in which the group met almost for a year, had their first interaction with the community, and exhibited "our freej" as part of the gallery's art festival "alwan 338". The famous gallery space, which turned the Adliya city into a "cultural neighborhood", had been asked to evacuate their space to make room for another restaurant in the area.

In an initiative started by Maysam Alnasser, a group of artists came together for one last show in Alriwaq to honor the support it gave to all emerging and established artists of Bahrain. Ulafa'a joined the show by reviving their first exhibition inside alRiwaq: "Gathering Point" and asked for people to share their fond memories of a place we call home.

By the Book - UK Edition

By the Book highlights structures that dictate everyday issues; the written or implied rulebooks of social behavior. Individuals are cultivated through the way their immediate environment functions, and through the rulebooks given to them. These two frameworks tell us what is acceptable and what is not, ideally to create some sense of order. If one were to break away from the collective pattern; act differently, think differently, it creates resistance. Singular subjectivity steps out of a collective symbolic order and refuses to fit into a composed whole. These artists critically analyze the rulebooks of their societies, and where the line is drawn between benefit and regulation, control and conformity; traditions and misconceptions.

By the Book is a traveling exhibition that was launched in Bahrain last May, and it is now being prepared for its second viewing in partnership with Birmingham's School of Art. It is considered of a great importance of us as it will introduce the multi-national students, researchers and artists to the contemporary art scene of Bahrain.

ULAFA’A INITIATIVE is pleased to present by the book, a group show by on view at Art Haven gallery.

By the book highlights the structures that dictate everyday issues; the written or implied rules books of social behavior. Individuals are cultured through books given to them, and the way their immediate environment functions. These frameworks tell us what is acceptable and what is not, ideally to create order. Singular subjectivity steps out of a collective symbolic order, and refuses to fit into a composed whole. If one were to break away from the collective pattern; act differently, think differently, it creates resistance. These artists critically analyze the rule books of their societies, and where the line is drawn between benefit and regulation, to control and conformity; and traditions to misconceptions.

By the book questions the things we should and shouldn’t do.
The spaces we should or shouldn’t occupy.
What to destroy, and what to preserve.
The way we should and shouldn’t dress.
When we should speak, when to hold our tongues.
When to be part of a society, and when to be an individual.
We question the books we choose to go by.
